Nikola Tanev
Nikola Tanev was born on October 5, 1890 in Svishtov. He has lived in France since 1905. He studied at the Paris Academy of Decorative Arts under Professor Paul Renoir and Professor Manjean, and briefly became a student of Monet.
Nikola Tanev was known and appreciated during his lifetime as a master of landscape painting, having mastered the creative lessons of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. He returned to Bulgaria in 1912 and organized his first solo exhibition.
Tanev is one of the most prominent Bulgarian artists. He travels a lot - to Germany, Italy, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Poland. His exhibitions follow one after another both abroad and in Bulgaria. His paintings are part of the expositions of a number of museums in our country and in Europe, as well as in private collections.
Nikola Tanev was one of the founders of the "Native Art" society and actively participated in its exhibitions in the 1920s and 1930s. An important place in his work is occupied by the landscapes of Karlovo, which he began painting in 1927. He also created a number of still lifes and nudes.
In 1945, during the Communist regime in our country, he was declared a "bourgeois artist" and was imprisoned for several months. Four years later, he suffered a stroke and was paralyzed. In May 1962, his anniversary exhibition was opened in Sofia, and on July 23 of the same year, he died.
