Konstantin Shtarkelov
Konstantin Georgiev Shtarkelov is a Bulgarian landscape painter, a master of watercolor.
He was born on March 25, 1889 in Sofia.
In 1915 he graduated from painting at the State Art and Industrial School in Sofia under Prof. Ivan Mrkvichka. He painted landscapes and flowers mainly with watercolors, creating his own style in this field. Among his best works are landscapes from Rila, Pirin, Sofia and Tarnovo regions. A perfect technician, characterized by his refined realism. He created a school in Bulgaria, and has followers in watercolor painting. His paintings are still valued the most and are in great demand today.
After September 9, 1944, K. Shtarkelov was exiled, expelled from the Union of Bulgarian Artists and spent five months in the Central Prison. His work was denied, he was declared "a stranger to progressive and revolutionary ideas, an official artist of the bourgeois regime and a tsarist favorite."
He died on April 29, 1961 in Sofia.
