Boris Georgiev


Boris Georgiev (1888–1962) was a Bulgarian artist, known for his work in Italy and India. Born in Varna, he studied painting in St. Petersburg and Munich, and then traveled around Europe, traveling and creating. In 1914–1917 he lived in the Italian Alps, where he created many of his best works.

After returning to Bulgaria in 1922, he began participating in international exhibitions and creating portraits of famous figures such as Petar Deunov and Albert Einstein. In 1931, he went to India, where he met Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, and created works inspired by Indian culture.

He returned to Bulgaria in 1936 and later lived in Brazil and Italy. He was awarded the "Crown of Italy" prize for lifetime achievement (1937). After his death in 1962 in Rome, his name was honored in Bulgaria, with the Art Gallery in Varna being named after him in 1990.
