Atanas Yaranov
Atanas Yaranov was born on July 13, 1940 in Sofia. He graduated from the National Academy of Arts in 1965 with a degree in Decorative and Monumental Painting, studying under Prof. Georgi Bogdanov. In his creative practice, he focuses on figurative composition, portraiture, as well as easel and monumental painting.
His works have participated in numerous collective exhibitions representing Bulgarian art in England, France, Italy, Germany, the USSR, Romania, Japan, the USA, Czechoslovakia, Poland and other countries. Atanas Yaranov has held solo exhibitions in Plovdiv, Warsaw, Varna, Bratislava, Sofia and West Berlin. He has received numerous national awards.
His works are in the collections of the National Art Gallery, the Sofia City Art Gallery, as well as in museums and galleries throughout Bulgaria. His works are owned by galleries and private collectors in Switzerland, the USA, France and other countries.
Atanas Yaranov died in 1988, leaving an unforgettable mark on the Bulgarian plastic culture of the 1970s and 1980s. In his oil paintings, pastels and murals, one can always feel the striving for monumentality and relief of forms. Regardless of the subject matter of his works, whether everyday or mythological, viewers easily recognize the characteristic massive, sculptural brushstrokes that are Yaranov's trademark.
