Angel Tilov


Bulgarian artist Angel Tilov was born in Bankya in 1912. In 1928, he won his first prize for painting and woodcarving and received a prize from the Gifted Children Fund. That same year, at just 16 years old, he was accepted as a full-time student at the Academy of Arts – a unique case in its history. He graduated with honors in 1934.

Tilov is among the pioneers of the Bulgarian poster and has won numerous national and international competitions, including first prize for a design for the coat of arms of the People's Republic of Bulgaria in 1947. As a painter, he creates impressive watercolors inspired by the nature of Bulgaria, distinguished by their expressiveness and rich color. He works in the fields of painting, watercolor and applied graphics.
